Does the City pick up furniture on Glenwood South?
This is the one question where Glenwood South differs sharply from the rest of Raleigh, and the answer is more or less no. City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services (919-996-3245) does run a scheduled curbside Bulky Load pickup at $35 — a special or appliance item is $52, electronics are collected free up to four items a week, tires aren't accepted. In a Five Points bungalow with a driveway and a grass strip, that's a good deal and we'll tell you to take it.
Here, though, there is nowhere to put the couch. The frontage on Glenwood Avenue is a nightlife sidewalk — restaurant patios, a bar queue on a Friday, foot traffic all evening — and what isn't sidewalk is a striped loading zone. A sectional set out to wait for a scheduled collection day doesn't sit politely by a mailbox; it sits in the middle of the busiest pedestrian block in Raleigh, for days, in whatever weather shows up. That's assuming the program applies at all: mid-rise apartment buildings are typically on private compactor or dumpster service rather than City carts, which usually takes the building out of municipal curbside bulky collection entirely. And the building's own compactor is not for furniture, which is exactly why abandoned couches appear next to the trash room at the end of every month.
So the honest framing: the City's $35 program is real and cheap, and it's built for houses. In a tower on a nightlife strip, the thing you're actually paying us for is that the couch never touches a public sidewalk — it goes from your living room, down the freight cab you reserved, out the service entrance, and into a truck. Verify current Bulky Load rules at raleighnc.gov before you plan around them; municipal programs change.
Working a tower on a nightlife strip
Glenwood South (27603 / 27605) is a few blocks of mid-rise apartments stacked over Raleigh's main bar and restaurant strip, and that combination shapes every job we do here. The buildings are new enough to have a real freight elevator and a real service corridor — and busy enough that both are booked solid at the end of the month.
We work the service entrance and the dock, never the Glenwood Avenue frontage. Loading on the strip means competing with delivery trucks, valet, and patio seating that spills into the walkway, so we schedule off-peak — morning or early afternoon — get the truck into the dock or the alley approach, and keep the sidewalk clear the whole time. Nothing about a cleanout should end with a bar's manager calling your leasing office.
Reservations are the real constraint, not the lifting. Most towers here want the freight cab booked in a set window, some want protective pads hung before anything moves, and a few management companies want a certificate of insurance naming the building on file first. That's a lighter lift than a big-city high-rise — usually one email — and we handle it; just tell us at booking so it's done before the window opens.
Peace Street, West Street and the Smoky Hollow side are their own micro-logistics, with garage clearances that decide whether the truck parks in the deck or at the curb outside it. We check clearance before we roll rather than discovering it with a box truck's roofline.

Then the sorting the state requires: North Carolina bans televisions, computers, appliances and white goods from landfills, so the old TV and the mini-fridge go to e-waste and scrap recycling rather than disposal. Flattened cardboard is recycled. What's actually finished — the stained mattress, the collapsed flat-pack shelf — goes to disposal at roughly $37 a ton at South Wake Landfill, with mattresses tipped at about $15 each. Cheap, local disposal is a genuine reason a clear-out here prices the way it does.
