Cary's 180,000-plus residents are largely tech and pharma families drawn to RTP and the top-rated schools, settled into established neighborhoods that are now hitting the downsizing and decluttering stage. The HOAs here are strict about curbside appearance, so we do the obvious thing: pull everything from the garage on a scheduled, flat-price pickup. The bread-and-butter is the packed garage and the whole-home clear — years of furniture, exercise gear, and boxes — photo-quoted flat, with usable items donated to Triangle Habitat and Goodwill.
It's worth naming the pattern, because it's specific to a town like this. Cary grew fast in the eighties and nineties around Preston, MacGregor and the Kildaire corridor, then again out toward Amberly and Green Level in 27519. Those first waves of buyers raised families in houses that never had a basement, which means everything they kept went up into the attic or out into the garage. Thirty years later the kids are gone, the house is going on the market or getting a kitchen redone, and someone has to deal with a two-car garage that hasn't parked a car since 2004. That's the Cary job, and it prices as a truck-fill.

No, Raleigh's $35 Bulky Load doesn't cover Cary
This trips up more Cary residents than anything else on this page. City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services runs a genuinely cheap curbside program — roughly $35 for a scheduled Bulky Load pickup, about $70 for a special appliance pickup, and free electronics collection of up to four items a week (no tires, ever). People read about it, assume "Raleigh" means the metro, and schedule around a service they can't actually book.
Cary is a separate municipality. It has its own town government and its own collection department, and the City of Raleigh's bulky program is for City of Raleigh collection customers only. If your address is 27511, 27513, 27518 or 27519, that $35 line item isn't available to you — you're on the Town of Cary's own schedule and rules, which are worth checking before you drag a sofa to the street on a guess.
Then there's the second problem, which applies even where a curbside program does exist: curbside means you carry it. The whole reason a Cary garage cleanout is a job is that the treadmill, the sleeper sofa and the forty boxes are inside, and getting them to the street is the labor. And in a covenanted neighborhood, a pile sitting at the curb waiting for a scheduled truck is exactly what the HOA sends letters about.
