The crew wraps it, walks it down the stairs and loads it. You never fold a queen through a doorway or tie it to a car roof. Disposal is already in the price.

Technically yes. City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services runs a scheduled curbside Bulky Load collection at $35, and a mattress qualifies for it (a special or appliance item runs $52, electronics are collected free up to four items a week, and tires aren't taken at all). If you have the time and the muscle, it's the cheapest line on this page, and we'll say so plainly.
What it isn't is convenient, and mattresses are the item where that bites hardest. It's a scheduled service — you arrange it and then you wait, which is no help at all when the new bed is being delivered Saturday and the old queen has to be out of the room first. It's curbside only, meaning the mattress has to already be at the street: you're the one folding it around the stair turn from a second-floor bedroom or a bonus room over the garage, and a king with a pillow top fights back. And because it waits outside for collection day, a Triangle thunderstorm can turn a dry mattress into forty extra pounds of soaked foam sitting on your lawn.
Then there's the covenant problem. Across the HOA suburbs — Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Wake Forest, Brier Creek — visible bulk at the curb is precisely what neighborhood rules exist to stop, and a mattress propped against the mailbox is about as visible as bulk gets. Plenty of our Wake County calls start with a homeowner who did the math on the $35 and then realized the mattress isn't legally allowed to sit outside long enough to be collected.
That's the whole trade. The City is cheaper. We're the version where nothing gets dragged, nothing waits on the lawn, and it's gone the day you asked. Verify the current Bulky Load rules and how to schedule directly with the City at raleigh.gov before you plan around them — municipal programs change.
We'll be straight about this, because a lot of junk-removal copy isn't: most used mattresses cannot be donated. Charities that take furniture are rightly strict about bedding, and anything stained, sagging, or of unknown history gets turned away at the dock. When a mattress genuinely is clean and sound — a guest-room bed used a dozen nights, a barely-slept-on set from a staged house — we route it toward donation first, and Habitat for Humanity ReStore (ten Triangle stores across Wake, Johnston, Durham and Orange counties) or Goodwill of Eastern North Carolina, which is headquartered here in Raleigh, are where it goes.
Everything else is a disposal job, handled properly. Mattresses and box springs tip at roughly $15 each at South Wake Landfill — and that number is the quiet reason this page exists. Because getting rid of a mattress locally is cheap, there is no honest justification for a $40 surcharge on one; it isn't a hazardous item, it isn't a landfill-banned item the way North Carolina bans televisions, appliances and whole tires, and it doesn't need special handling. Steel innersprings get pulled for scrap where the load makes that practical. A mattress should be a cheap add to any load, and on our quote it is.
No basements in North Carolina. Homes here sit on slab or crawl space, so the guest mattress isn't stored downstairs — it's in a bonus room over the garage, in a second-floor bedroom, or shoved into the attic access. That means mattresses in the Triangle almost always come down a staircase, and in the newer subdivisions of North Raleigh, Apex, Holly Springs and Wake Forest the bonus-room stair is usually the tightest turn in the house. We plan for it; you don't have to.
Inside the Beltline, it's the doorways. Five Points, Hayes Barton, Historic Oakwood and Mordecai are 1910s–1930s houses with narrow halls, steep original stairs and heart-pine floors. We wrap, pad and load off the street quickly, because these are narrow streets where a truck can't idle across a neighbor's drive.
Apartments and condos are about the elevator, not the lift. Downtown, Glenwood South, the Village District, North Hills, Morrisville and Brier Creek buildings mean a loading dock, a reserved elevator, and sometimes a certificate of insurance naming the building before the crew comes up. It's a much lighter lift than a Manhattan co-op board, but we carry the insurance and we'll send the COI — just tell us when you book.
Dorms and student rentals have their own clock. Campus move-out windows are enforced to the hour, so we schedule around a hall's stated deadline rather than against it, and we stage on the street rather than in a fire lane.
