Two very different phone calls, one neighborhood

Southeast Raleigh is a historically Black community with deep roots and a lot of continuity — families who have held the same address for forty and fifty years, churches that anchor whole blocks, and some of the most affordable housing left inside the city limits. It is also changing fast, with new buyers and new construction arriving on streets that have looked much the same for a generation. Both of those facts are true at once, and they produce the two calls we get from 27610.

The first is a family. A parent has died or moved into care, and the house they raised everyone in has to be emptied — closets, the attic, the crawl space, the shed out back, the carport, the china nobody has room for and the furniture that has been in the front room since 1978. It is not really a hauling job. It is a week nobody wanted to have, with a deadline attached to it, and what the family needs is a crew that shows up on time, works quietly, does not make them lift anything, does not pass judgment on the state of a room, and puts the usable half in front of a charity instead of in a landfill.

The second is an owner turning a property. A landlord with a unit that has to show Monday, an investor who just closed on a house, a family cleaning up a rental they inherited. Different clock, different paperwork, same physical work: clear it, sweep it, get a number that can be dropped into a scope without a surprise on the invoice.

We do both, and we try to do them without confusing the two. A neighborhood is not inventory. The house at the center of the first call is somebody's family home whether or not it is about to be sold, and that is how our crews are told to treat it.

Does the City of Raleigh pick this up in Southeast Raleigh?

Yes, and this is one of the few pages where we tell you to consider the city first. Southeast Raleigh is inside the city limits, so City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services will collect a scheduled Bulky Load for $35, a special or appliance item — a refrigerator, a water heater, a range — for $52, and up to four electronics items a week at no charge; tires are excluded. Call 919-996-3245 or look up your collection day at raleighnc.gov. Plenty of junk-removal pages bury this because $35 undercuts them. If you have one sofa, no deadline, and someone who can get it to the street, that program is the right answer and we would rather you use it than pay us $126.

What you're paying us for is not a lower price. It's the two things the city program structurally cannot do.

It does not come inside. The city collects what is already sitting at the street. Getting a fifty-year-old sleeper sofa out of a back bedroom, a chest freezer up out of a crawl space, or twenty years of a shed onto the verge is entirely on you — and for the person most likely to be reading this, an executor in their sixties clearing their mother's house, or a widow who cannot lift a dresser, that is the whole job. It's the half nobody can do alone, and it's the half our flat price covers.

And it does not come today. Bulky Load is scheduled. When probate has a date, a closing is Friday, a unit has to show Monday, or the family only has this weekend together to get it done, "sometime next collection cycle" is not a plan. Same-day and next-morning are normally open here.

Scale is the third limit. A whole house is not a bulky load — it's several full trucks. Run through the city program, that becomes many separate scheduled collections with the contents of a family's home stacked at the curb on a residential street in between. Nobody in this neighborhood wants that display of a parent's belongings out front for a week, and it is exactly what our crews are there to prevent.

Where it goes — and why that matters on an estate

Donation first, and we mean it as more than a line. A house held for fifty years is full of usable furniture, tools, linens and housewares. Habitat for Humanity ReStore runs ten stores across Wake, Johnston, Durham and Orange counties and offers free large-item pickup, and Goodwill of Eastern North Carolina is headquartered in Raleigh with stores throughout the Triangle. For a family, that's the difference between "we threw away Mama's things" and "somebody's using them." Ask for the receipt and we'll get it to you — for an estate being settled, a documented donation trail is worth having.

One honest boundary: we're haulers, not appraisers. We don't value anything and we don't want to be the reason a family finds out too late that something mattered. If there's any chance a piece has value, have an appraiser or estate-sale firm through before we start.

Everything North Carolina bans from landfill disposal is routed rather than tipped — appliances and white goods to scrap metal, televisions and computers to certified e-waste recycling, whole tires and yard trash to their own streams. Only the genuine remainder goes to disposal, at roughly $37 a ton at South Wake Landfill. It's all inside the flat price.

When Southeast Raleigh calls us

• Settling a parent's estate. The house of forty or fifty years, cleared with the family setting the pace and the usable half donated.
• Downsizing after a long time in one place. Moving to something smaller or to be near children out of state, where most of a full house can't come along.
• Preparing to sell. Attic, shed and closets emptied and the rooms clear before photographs — one quoted total, usually one to two days.
• Rental turnover. Tenant out, unit has to show, everything left behind gone and swept in between.
• A foreclosure or inherited property. A house nobody has been inside for months, cleared and made safe to walk.
• Appliance day. The fridge died, the new one is being delivered, and the old one has to be out of the kitchen first.
• After a storm. Limbs, fence sections and whatever the water got to under the house — priced by the cubic yard.
