It is genuinely nice, and it is genuinely awkward to get a sofa out of.
Everything about junk removal here is shaped by one fact: your address does not have a curb. It has a porte-cochere you cannot block, a loading dock with reserved hours, a service elevator with a move window and a pad requirement, a trash room that explicitly does not accept bulk, and a parking deck with a height bar. So the answer people reach for in the rest of Raleigh — put it at the street and let the City take it for $35 — is not an option that physically exists on this block. Yes on paper, no in practice — and it is worth being precise about why, because the $35 line item on the City's website sends a lot of Midtown residents down a dead end. North Hills is inside the city limits, so City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services lists a scheduled Bulky Load at $35, special and appliance items at $70, free electronics collection up to four items a week, and no tires accepted, all arranged at 919-996-3245. If you own a ranch house on a side street off Six Forks with a driveway and a curb, that program is cheap, it works, and it beats us on price. Use it.
From the fourteenth floor it is a different object entirely. The program is curbside collection: the City picks up what is already sitting at a public street on your assigned day. A tower condo does not present a curb to the street — it presents a lobby, a porte-cochere you are not allowed to obstruct, a loading dock with reserved hours and a service elevator with a move window. To qualify for that $35 you would have to move the sectional out of your unit, pad and book the elevator, get it through the dock, wheel it across the parking deck and set it on a public street, then leave it there until the truck comes. That is the entire job — the lifting, the elevator, the dock, the carry — performed by you, to save $35, and then a sofa sits on the sidewalk of the nicest block in Raleigh for a day or two with your building's name behind it.
There is a second, quieter problem. City curbside collection is built around single-family and small-residential carts at a street curb. Large multi-family buildings in Midtown are generally on private dumpster or compactor service contracted by the building rather than on City carts — which means the program frequently is not available to your address at all, no matter how the fee schedule reads. And the building's own compactor rules prohibit exactly the bulk you are trying to get rid of.
What we do instead: come to the unit inside the freight window your front desk gave you, carry everything out through the service corridor, load at the dock, and haul the same day. Nothing waits at a curb, nothing gets left beside the trash room, and management has the certificate of insurance in hand before we arrive. What we can't take: paint, propane tanks, solvents and other household hazardous waste. Televisions, computers, appliances and whole tires are landfill-banned in North Carolina — we take those, they simply get routed to recycling rather than disposal.
Midtown loads donate unusually well. In a district where the median home runs past $823K, furniture leaves because it stopped matching the room, not because it broke. So donation is the first call, not a slogan: Habitat for Humanity ReStore runs ten Triangle stores with free large-item pickup across Wake, Johnston, Durham and Orange counties, and Goodwill of Eastern North Carolina is headquartered in Raleigh. Ask and we will get you a receipt for anything we place.
The rest gets sorted, because the state requires it. North Carolina bans televisions, computers, appliances and whole tires from landfills, so the old wall TV, the monitor stack and the mini-fridge go to e-waste and scrap rather than disposal — the Durham Waste Disposal and Recycling Center takes appliances and metal at no charge, which is why an appliance out of a condo does not carry a special surcharge from us. Metal frames, shelving and mattress innersprings are pulled for scrap where the load allows. Only the genuine remainder is tipped, at roughly $37 a ton at South Wake Landfill, with mattresses at about $15 each.
The dock is booked before the crew leaves. Midtown buildings run reservation sheets for the loading dock and the service elevator, and most restrict moves to set weekday hours with a deposit at the front desk. Give us the window you were assigned — or the building name and management company and we will arrange it — and the crew arrives inside it, not "sometime that afternoon." Evening and weekend windows are common here and we work them.
We bring our own pads. Buildings that require the elevator cab to be padded generally supply blankets, and generally they are already in use. We arrive with pads for the cab, the jambs and the corridor corners, so a missing set at the desk does not cancel the job.
COIs are a real ask, just a calmer one. Several North Hills buildings and management companies want a certificate of insurance naming the building and the manager on file before a crew comes upstairs. Nothing like a Manhattan co-op board package, but genuinely the most common reason a booked pickup gets turned away at the desk. Name the building when you book and it is filed in advance.
Structured parking has a height bar. Retail over decks is the neighborhood's whole design, and a box truck that does not clear the deck entrance is a problem you would only discover after renting one. We stage at the dock or the service entrance and size the truck to the building — one of the quiet reasons self-hauling from a Midtown condo goes wrong.
The porte-cochere stays clear. We do not park across the entrance, and we do not run a load through the lobby if there is a service route. Your neighbors and the concierge notice the difference, and it is why buildings here let us back.

How fast can you clear a unit?
Usually same-day or next-day; a one-bedroom is about an hour of crew time, a furnished three-bedroom two to three. Evening and weekend freight windows are common here. Book ahead at month-end when turnovers stack up.
