Does Raleigh pick up furniture in North Hills?

Here's the honest wrinkle, and it's specific to this neighborhood. Unlike Cary, Apex or Durham, North Hills sits inside the City of Raleigh, so on paper you're entitled to City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services' scheduled Bulky Load at $35 — special and appliance items are $70, electronics are collected free up to four per week, tires aren't accepted, and you arrange it through the City at 919-996-3245. For a Six Forks ranch house with a driveway, that's a genuinely cheap option and it beats us on price.

Now picture using it from the eleventh floor. The program is curbside: the City collects what's already sitting at the street on your scheduled day. A tower condo doesn't have a curb — it has a lobby, a porte-cochere and a loading dock. To qualify, you would have to get the sectional out of the unit, down the service elevator inside the building's move window, through the loading dock, and out to a public street, then leave it there until the truck arrives. That is the entire job — the lifting, the elevator, the dock, the carry — done by you, to save $35. Nobody does it, which is why sofas end up parked beside Midtown compactors with a note taped to them.

There's a second layer. City curbside collection is built around single-family and small-residential carts at a street curb; large multi-family buildings in Midtown are typically on private dumpster or compactor service contracted by the building, which means the City program often isn't available to your address at all. And bulk furniture is exactly what the building's dumpster rules prohibit. So the $35 line item you found on raleighnc.gov is, for most people in a North Hills tower, theoretical.
